Testosterone Stroke

|

Testosterone StrokeIn recent years, record numbers of men have been turning to testosterone supplements to give a much needed boost to their energy levels and sex drive. And though treating ‘Low T’ may be all the rage, it is important to understand that these products come with a certain risk. In some men, testosterone has caused stroke and other serious side effects. These concerns are particularly troubling given how popular testosterone supplementation has become, with nearly 3% of American men over the age of 40 taking them.

Studies on Testosterone Stroke Risk

A November 2013 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that testosterone boosters pose a serious risk to some men’s health. The study included men who had high cholesterol, as well as men who were relatively healthy with low cholesterol and unblocked arteries. The research determined that approximately 26% of the men with high cholesterol suffered a stroke or heart attack after undergoing testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Of those with low cholesterol, nearly 20% had a stroke or heart attack.

Another study conducted in 2010 was halted prematurely when researchers noticed that men with a history of cardiovascular issues were having strokes, heart attacks, and cardiovascular complications after taking testosterone supplements.

What is a Stroke?

Strokes occur when a blood clot blocks an artery, or when a blood vessel bursts, blocking blood flow to a portion of the brain. When either of these things happen, brain cells die and abilities affected by that region of the brain are lost (in most cases permanently). These abilities typically include speech, movement, and memory. Abilities lost depend on which region of the brain the stroke occurs, and how much of it has been damaged.

Symptoms of a testosterone stroke typically appear suddenly, and may include:

  • Numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg
  • Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Severe headache with no known cause

AndroGel Lawsuits Accuse Manufacturer of Hiding Stroke, Heart Attack Risk

Five recent lawsuits filed in Chicago federal court accuse the manufacturer of AndroGel, the most popular TRT product on the U.S. market, of withholding information about the drug’s side effects. The complaints were filed less than a week after the FDA launched an investigation into the safety of testosterone boosters.

Plaintiffs in the AndroGel Lawsuits ranged in age from 50 and 63. Three men allegedly suffered heart attacks, and a fourth said he had a stroke after taking testosterone. The fifth man claims he experienced a transient ischemic attack, or ‘mini-stroke.’

According to the complaints, drugmaker Abbott Laboratories and its AbbVie subsidiary “deceived potential AndroGel users by relaying positive information through the press, including testimonials from retired professional athletes” and questionable statistics which suggested a widespread need for testosterone supplementation, “while downplaying known adverse and serious health risks.”

The cases are: Aurecchia v. AbbVie Inc., 14-cv-00772; Benn v. AbbVie, 14-cv-00774; Gallagher v. AbbVie Inc., 14-cv-00776; Marino v. AbbVie Inc., 14-cv-00777 and Myers v. AbbVie Inc., 14- cv-00780; U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois (Chicago).
